Anemia is defined as reduction of Hemoglobin below normal levels in the blood.
Anemia in MEN- Hb <13 gram/dl
Anemia in WOMEN- Hb < 11.5 gram/dl
The Red Blood Cells may be normal or decreased in the blood
Clinical features:
• DYSPNOEA ON EXERTION
• PALENESS OF SKIN
• ANGINA
• GENERAL WEAKNESS
Mechanism of Anemia
1. CHANGES IN BONE MARROW
• HYPOPLASTIC ANEMIA: Hypoplasia or Aplasia (tumor)
• DYSHEMOPOEISIS ( Deficiency of iron, Vit B12)
2. CHANGES IN CIRCULATION
• POST HEMORRHAGIC ANEMIA (Bleeding)
• HEMOLYTIC ANEMIAS (Hypersplenism, Malaria)
Types of Anemia
APLASTIC ANEMIA
• Aplastic anemias are caused by BONE MARROW FAILURE…
• The major clinical effect of Aplastic anemia is PANCYTOPENIA, i.e Decrease in all blood cell types
• Decrease in RBC’S > ANEMIA
• Decrease in WBC ‘S > INFECTIONS
• Decrease in PLATELETS > SPONTANEOUS BLEEDING
DYSHEMOPOIETIC ANEMIA
CAUSED by deficiency of IRON (blood loss, low intake)
• VIT B12 deficiency
• FOLIC ACID deficiency
Effects: Bone marrow is filled with blast cells (immature blood cells)
IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA
The most common type of anemia
Causes:
• Poor nutrition
• Worms
• Multiple pregnancies
Changes in Blood CP:
• Hemoglobin- LESS than normal
• MCV (mean cell volume ‘ RBC size’) - LESS than normal
• MCH (mean cell hemoglobin ‘ RBC color’) - LESS than normal
• PCV (packed cell volume ‘ RBC in Percentage’ ) -LESS than normal
